Dear Friends,

I invite you to pray daily for those who are unemployed at this time. You may wish to use the following prayer, or some other form:

Heavenly Father, we remember before you those who suffer want and anxiety from lack of work. Guide the people of this land so to use our public and private wealth that all may find suitable and fulfilling employment, and receive just payment for their labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

From the Book of Common Prayer p. 824
To respond to the unemployed in our own communities, St. Mark's is offering a free four week course that I will lead. BETWEEN JOBS-a Spiritual Exploration of What's Next. starts on Tuesday, May 5th from 9:00 am to 11:45 am and continues each Tuesday in May. This course is open to anyone who is currently unemployed and the goal is to help participants listen for their unique call. We will explore how to strengthen connections with others, with the world around us and with our deeper self, explore passionate connections with the world, how to receive as gifts our innate abilities, those things that we do well and love doing and then moving from resistance to commitment to our inner sense of call.

At the time or writing there are 17 participants, three of whom are parishioners. Registration will remain open till the first session. To register send your name, email and/or phone number to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 10 St. Mark's Road, Burlington, or email stmarksburl@rcn.com. If you have questions, email me, or leave a message at 781-272-1586. Please pray especially for all who participate in these sessions.

Blessings,

John

Another month has gone by and it has been a very busy month here at St. Mark's. Holy week services were well attended from Maundy Thursday with feet washing and stripping the altar to a somber Good Friday and then a glorious Easter when the church burst with people and flowers. It was great to see new and old faces once again. Looking forward we have the Youth Walk for Hunger to benefit Project Bread which needs our support. Plans are moving along for John's Between Jobs program which will start on May 5th   for people who are unemployed. The excitement is building for the Tea Party on May 9th to  benefit the Pantry. There are some beautiful baskets to be raffled off along with a couple of quilted table runners donated by the Burlington Senior Citizens Quilting group. The Team has put in a lot of hours preparing for this event. Please plan to join us.

When I was among the employed, my plan for my retirement years was to become a volunteer in some way. It is easy to find opportunities to volunteer at church but I felt I should extend myself beyond church and I find being an Ombudsman works for me. Recently I had the opportunity to attend the annual Minuteman's President's Volunteer Service Awards breakfast honoring 94 recipients who donated 15,569 hours of service valued at $378,171. As I sat in a large church hall in Bedford along with more than 200 people, even though this was a non-religious event, I thought how God's spirit had inspired these people to step up and move forward to help others. There was a married couple who had been volunteering for many years, they are both 93 years old but looked like they were in their 60's. They were bright, happy and full of energy. It was heart warming to see a group of high school students who are also participating in volunteer service. People who volunteer one or two hours a week not only help others and their communities but also experience better health in later years, whether in terms of greater longevity, higher functional ability, or lower rates of depression. Volunteering is extremely rewarding and one person can make a difference in the lives of many by serving in our local neighborhoods. Anyone is welcome to join me at any time.

Peace,

Dear Friends,

Recently the House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church sent out a pastoral letter responding to the economic, environmental, and spiritual challenges we are facing today.  The letter focuses on living simply and giving generously found in the following words of Paul to the Philippians:

I have learned to be content with whatever I have.  I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty.  In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need.  I can do all things through him who strengthens me. --Philippians 4:11b - 13

As a Christian I hear the heartfelt truth in these words.  In many ways I am content with what I have.  I feel blessed to have employment that allows me to live in comfort.  I feel blessed that there is always food in the kitchen for whenever I may feel hungry.  I feel blessed that through my travels I have seen the faces of hunger and poverty.  If I took the time to list all my blessings, I know it could go on for pages and pages.

And yet, as a human being, I am not content with what I have.  Yes, I have everything I need to survive, but I want more.  I want to drive a fancy car and take lavish vacations.  I want to have dinner out at a restaurant every night.  I want to go to the Burlington Mall and buy whatever I desire.  And just like my blessings, I'm sure my wants could go on and on and on.

So how do I live by Paul's words trusting that God has given me everything I need?  How do I keep myself from buying those extra things that aren't necessities?  I take time to think about what I truly want.  In Covenant! a group of us is trying to find this answer: what is it that I truly want and desire?  The exercise is simple.  Take a piece of paper and write down these words, "I want..." and then finish the sentence.  When you're done with the first sentence, write the words again, "I want..." and finish this second sentence.  For five minutes keep filling in the blank starting with "I want..." After five minutes you may have about ten sentences all about what you want.  What is amazing is that with each sentence you will be getting closer and closer to what it is you truly want.  The wants in your brain will disappear to be replaced with the wants of your heart.

Trust God, and trust yourself.

Youth Group Field Trip

We are excited to announce our third annual Youth Group Canobie Lake trip.  We will meet briefly in the choir room following the service on Sunday, June 7th, have a snack and then head to the park.  Everyone is encouraged to bring a bagged lunch.  We will return to St. Mark's at 7:30pm and youth group members can be picked up at the church.  The trip is open to active members of the current youth group.  Admission to the park will be $12.00, with the balance being covered by the Youth Group budget.  We are not allowed to bring food or drinks into the park, so members are advised to bring some pocket money if they would like to purchase anything once inside.  We are looking forward to a great day of fun!

Also, our final Youth Group Meeting for 2008-2009 will take place on Sunday, June 14th.  We are planning to have a cookout at our house following the service.  We will provide transportation to our house, and ask that the Youth Group members be picked up at 3:00pm from:

Outreach Notes

The Wednesday Fellowship Lunch will be held on May 13th at 12:00 noon in the Parrish Hall at St. Mark's Church.  All are welcome to come and share lunch and  conversation.  Bring a friend if you would like.

The Outreach Team would like to thank all of you who were helpful in filling our box for El Hogar.  It was mailed on April 22nd.  St. Mark's sent 14 pairs of boys briefs, 5 Tee shirts, 4 pairs of boys socks and 17 coiled notebooks.  Perhaps we can start earlier in the fall filling a box and keeping it longer in the Narthax being able to have more time to get things together.  Our box weighed 20 pounds, maybe the next one will weigh 40.  Thank you all so much.

And don't forget........Jubilee Celebrates Africa.....May 16th, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Peters Church, 320 Boston Post Road, Weston, Ma 02493.  All proceeds benefit the Jubilee Committee of the Diocese of Mass.  Tickets for the dinner are $25.00.  Anyone wishing to go as a group from St. Mark's please sign the sheet in the Narthax (on the elevator door).  Anyone who would like to make a contribution to this cause may send a check  made out to the Jubilee Ministry and send to the Episcopal Diocese of Ma, 138 Tremont Street, Boston, Ma  02111.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: Apologies for the error last month when El Hogar magically moved to El Salvador from Honduras. The fault is all mine, not Marge's
Mother's Day Flowers

Once again, we plan to have the Altar of Roses for Mother's Day. Order forms are available on the back pew of the church. The cost is $5/rose, and our net proceeds will be donated to a local battered women's shelter through REACH. The deadline for ordering roses is Sunday, May 3rd.
A Special Thank You!

A special Thank You to everyone who helped make Holy Week and Easter Sunday special. We know that this time of our year is a lot of work for the Altar Guild - palms on Palm Sunday, color changes, stripping and re-decorating the altar, and of course the glorious flowers on Easter morning. Thank you! We know too that it is extra work for Susan Dearborn and the adult and youth choirs - extra rehearsals and special music, more working days. Thank you! And thank you to all those who showed up  throughout Holy Week. It is a special time to be church and a very special time to be working and worshipping together as a community.
Counter Needed

Can you sort paper? Make copies? Add using a calculator? If you answered yes you have all the qualifications needed to be a counter at St. Mark's!!!  Counters work in teams of two to add up checks and cash received during the past week and at the collection, and deposit it in the bank. We have four teams of counters so you only have to do this one Sunday a month. If you can't be there for your Sunday you can arrange either to swap with another counting team or with your fellow counter to count and do the deposit on an evening that week.

We are looking for one person to count as a replacement for Angela Anderson, who is now our treasurer. If you are interested please see Angela or Karen Donahue, or email Angela.

Project Bread's FoodSource Hotline

With the high cost of living in the Commonwealth and more than 522,000 people across the state struggling to put food on the table, chances are that a friend or neighbor of yours is having difficulty making ends meet this winter. Project Bread's FoodSource Hotline can help. The FoodSource Hotline is the only comprehensive information and referral service for the hungry in Massachusetts. Counselors can provide information and screen callers for food stamp eligibility, connect them to school meal programs, and direct them to emergency food resources right in their neighborhood. Counselors can assist callers in 160 languages and the calls are both personalized and confidential.  Extend your goodwill and reach out to those in need. A call to Project Bread's FoodSource Hotline may be all it takes to provide comfort to someone who is struggling.

In response to the increased demand for help, Project Bread's Food Source Hotline has extended its hours to:
Monday - Friday: 8:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M. Saturday: 10:00 A.M. -  2:00P.M. 1-800-645-8333  TTY: 1-800-377-1292.
Food Pantry Coordinators
The Burlington Food Pantry is looking for two or more dynamic individuals to serve as co-coordinators.  The Pantry is an all volunteer organization.  The pantry is housed on the grounds of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Burlington and serves residents of the town.  Currently the pantry serves 130 families and is open from 3 - 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.  The pantry has existed for 29 years and has seen continual growth.  It is overseen by a Board of Directors comprised of community members, representatives from local congregations, a representative from the Burlington Community Life Center and a representative from the Clergy Association.  Support also comes from 24 active volunteers.

This is an exciting time for the pantry as it expands into a brand new space and reaches out for support from the Boston Food Bank.  The individuals who are interested in this volunteer service to the community will have the opportunity to effect change and really make a difference in people's lives.

If you are interested in learning more about this exciting opportunity, please contact Valerie Healey, Volunteer Coordinator, at vhealey1207@peoplehelpingpeopleinc.org.

EASTER THANKS

I would like to thank all of our Youth and Adult Choir members who added so much to our Holy Week and Easter services.  They put in extra rehearsal time to prepare, and I am grateful for their time and talents. Please join me in thanking them for their extra efforts.

YOUTH CHOIR IN MAY

Since many of our Youth Choir members will be participating in the Walk for Hunger with the St. Mark's contingent, we will delay having an anthem from the Youth Choir until the second Sunday of May.  On that Sunday we will sing a special song in honor of all of the mothers in the congregation. We'll also be teaching the congregation a new song, "Your Words", so bring your singing voices!

TEA PARTY

The Adult Choir will be providing entertainment for the American Girl Tea Party happening at St. Mark's on Saturday, May 9th.  We will be singing folk songs and some old standards, and Bruce Burrell will be adding his own flourishes on saxophone and clarinet.  If you like music from the great American songbook, like "Smoke Gets in your Eyes", or "The Way You Look Tonight", or "Embraceable You", come join us!
EDSNotes from EDS

I have started working as a consultant for the Winchester Unitarian Society. This has been a blessing in many ways. It is yet another verification that I love working with faith groups who are engaged in working for positive change in the world. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about a different way of being church. And of course it's a paycheck!

This past Sunday I had the opportunity to hear a sermon from a noted Unitarian clergyman, the Rev. Dr. Victor Carpenter, now retired, who was in as supply clergy. He preached a truly wonderful sermon, in which he asked us to consider blogs and Twitter. For those of you who don't know, blogs are places online where people say what they think - much like editorials. Twitter is an online social network where the members communicate with each other in short messages - limited by what can show on the screen of a cell phone - about what they are doing.

Dr. Carpenter is an older man, and to some degree he laughed at Twitter, people sending tweets, as the messages are called, about the mind-numbingly dull, trivial details of what they do in their day - waiting in line at the bank, shopping for groceries, watching TV. But then he made a truly lovely analogy. A blog, he said, is like a statement of belief. Tweets are a record of the actions we take based on our beliefs.

Lives are made up of mostly trivial moments, but if you step back and look at them you can see a pattern. I sat there in that unfamiliar church and thought of how often I've considered starting a blog. But what would my tweets be? Maybe, recently, the pattern has changed a little - I hope so. But otherwise I think my patterns would show me mostly as materialistic and centered on myself and those few in my immediate circle.

Saying what I believe, for me, is easy. Acting on it is hard. And, with God's help, surely I can do better. Maybe I'll sign up for Twitter before I start a blog!

Peace!
