Welcome to the new electronic ROAR.
You are receiving this either because you responded to our
survey, or because you were in our 'St. Mark's Family' email
list.
We are experimenting with a newsletter
software package that, if we like it, will provide a
number of ways to improve our communications both within
and outside the parish. Over time, and with your help, we will
be enhancing the content and especially adding pictures (don't
be surprised to see me prowling around with a camera in the
future). We are providing printed copies to those
who requested it in our recent survey.
You can help us get the word out
about St. Mark's by forwarding the ROAR to your friends using
the 'Forward email' link at the bottom of the newsletter. If
you use that link instead of your email program's forward
feature your friends can easily subscribe themselves if they
want to. Addresses are strictly protected by privacy and
anti-spam policies.
Send your content and comments or suggestions to me at cjowens325@earthlink.net or drop it in the
ROAR folder in the box inside the Admin Office door.
Thanks! Catherine

| Letter from John de
Beer
Dear Friends,
For me this summer brought
times of rest and refreshment, challenge and
opportunity, sadness and loss. Through my conversations
with many of you these past couple of months, I know
that your lives contain these same ingredients. Thank
you for the love and prayer that you extend to me and to
one another.
The summer also has been a
time of preparation at St. Mark's. You will notice a
change in the appearance of the garden, the entry way as
you come into the narthex, and the parish hall. The
Sunday School teachers have been preparing the
curriculum and the classrooms, Sarah Manly and the youth
group leaders are strengthening programs and exploring a
ministry with young adults. I am excited to offer
further programs of adult formation (see the Adult
Education article).
Our mission is to create a
place of safety and support in which all God's people
are given the opportunity to be transformed, as we
explore our faith and our call to service. All of our
preparation has this end in mind. St. Paul says that we
are transformed by the renewal of our minds. So I invite
you to take full advantage of all that has been
prepared. Let us join with one another, young and old,
so that God can renew our minds, reminding us that
before we are anything else, we are the beloved children
of the God revealed in Jesus. Life will continue to
bring of rest and refreshment, challenge and
opportunity, sadness and loss. Let us prepare
ourselves!

Adult Education Opportunities this
Fall
Connect? helps you to hear
Jesus' invitation to a new life in God's reign of love and
justice. You build relationships in small groups that provide
support and encouragement to grow. No prior knowledge is
needed - this is an introduction to what it can mean for you
to connect to a community of worship. A light lunch is served
and childcare is available. Classes will meet
from 10:15 -11:55 AM on Sundays after worship, beginning on
Sunday September 21st through October 26th. Sign up at church
or email connect.john@gmail.com if you would like to
participate or, if you have already done Connect?, if
you would like to help with the food, the program, or the
child care. Covenant! is a six-month
small group curriculum for those wanting serious and in-depth
exploration of their gifts and call in a community of support
and accountability. Each person learns to create a healthy,
joyful, and spiritually nourishing rhythm of life that
expresses his or her identity and vocation in Christ. Classes
will meet on Tuesdays from 7:00 - 8:30 pm, beginning on
October 21st. Contact John de Beer at connect.john@gmail.com if you would
like to participate. |

from Sarah: What a Summer!
What a summer we had at St. Marks! Unlike some
churches that go to sleep during the hot months we've been
working away. Shirley and her team of lionesses have
completely transformed the parish hall. Catherine and
the Vestry are creating a welcoming narthex. And we've
had Bible study every Sunday! Phew. And
while I'm sad to see summer go I'm also excited about my new
ministries for the upcoming year. Twice a month I'll be
teaching Godly Play under the great tutelage of Tracey.
It will be great to get to know the kids better and work on my
teaching skills. I'll still be helping with the youth
group and planning the Intergenerational Sunday
services. Outside of church I'll be collaborating with
the Diocese in developing a ministry program for people in the
twenties. I'm most excited about the new
high school Sunday school program we're starting this
year. It's open to all high school students in the
parish as well as their friends. Together we'll be
looking at the Millennium Development Goals which the National
Episcopal Church voted to support in 2006. These eight
goals were created by the United Nations to end the
devastating poverty around the world. The goals focus on
such issues as hunger, fatal diseases, education, and the
environment. With the help of Deb Smyth I hope to create
a class where we can have discussion and field trips.
The plan is to meet after church on the Sundays when there is
no youth group. Let me know if you have any
questions! So that's what I'll be doing!
Where will your ministry take you this
year? Peace, Sarah

Helping People
On August 6th the Presbyterian Church, St Malachy's
Church, St. Margaret's Church, St. Mark's Church, Temple
Shalom Emeth and the United Church of Christ Congregational
Church joined together in an effort to raise money for People
Helping People. This was held at Flatbread in Bedford
who generously gave a percentage of each pizza that was sold
between 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. We were also able to sell
baked goods that were donated by each
Church.
We are very happy to tell you that the Fundraiser was

From the Senior Warden: If you build
it...
I was writing to a friend about some of
the changes at St. Mark's over the summer. John and Sarah
both talked about many of these. Of course there were
also some boring administrative events, like being audited
(finally!) and beginning the process of updating our database
of parishioners and other contacts. With Senada's help our
administrative infrastructure is getting set up to allow us to
welcome new members. Furthermore Justin Turner is
creating a new and improved website for us and of course we
are going electronic with our newsletter, to help get the word
out about all that we have to offer. And we are having an Open
House (and hopefully a Garden Party if the weather permits) on
Sunday the 14th. We are poised for growth!
Wouldn't it be wonderful if floods of people came on the
14th, and all of them decided to keep coming? It might happen,
but my guess is it won't. Change takes time. People are busy.
They may not see our signs or read the newspapers. It's going
to take awhile to get our newsletter out to more people, and
to drive people to our new website. We can't be discouraged if
growth doesn't happen as quickly as we might want it to. All
we need to do is to keep doing what we are doing - celebrating
God, serving others, learning and growing, having fun
- and of course telling other people about it!
So have faith - through us God can do wonders, it just
might take a little time!
Peace!

Smile!
Our wardens have gone traveling, they're on a mission
bent
To pick us out a rector with whom we'll be content.
He mustn't be too high and he mustn't be too low,
We'd like him very plastic, a man made out of
dough.
He mustn't be too short and he mustn't be too tall,
He mustn't have opinions that clash with ours at
all.
He mustn't be too young and he mustn't be too old
But he must be very humble and never speak out
bold.
He must please the rich and haughty, the poor and humble
too.
And must always praise us richly for everything we
do.
He must be very tactful and have pleasant things to
say,
And when we disobey him he must look the other way.
Our wardens seem to think that they can find the very
man.
But, somehow I am doubtful if they ever really can.
From a Parish Bulletin. (thanks to Doris Floyd!)

Vestry
Notes
The vestry was on our summer schedule of meeting once a
month. In the three summer meetings we reviewed and approved
the form letter and data collection form that was sent to our
mailing list, reviewed and approved the audit report from our
audit team from Christ Church Waltham and discussed draft
financial policies, which we hope to approve in September. We
also continued to conduct normal business around financial
outlays for our various improvement projects, property
management, and initial plans for the fall fair and 50th
anniversary.
Joan kept us up to date on our financial situation. She
was pleased to tell us that Karen Donahue has agreed to serve
as her Assistant treasurer. Karen will begin to get more
involved in September. Thank you Karen! In the meantime
Senada has successfully taken over data entry of the pledge
contributions and other income. Joan updated all of the
signatures on accounts and has continued to improve our
investment profile.
The vestry is unanimous in hoping that John will continue
with us as our Rector. John shared with us that, should his
discernment process lead him away from that possibility, he
will stay with us at least through the middle of
next year, thereby providing a smooth transition over the
change in Senior Wardens and continued support of our
transformation into a vital, growing parish. Thank you
John!
Minutes and treasurers reports are posted on the bulletin
board outside of John's
office. |
