The Sanctuary Cross

The cross was presented in honor "of those who go down to the sea in ships"

The Sanctuary Cross

The Cross is Twelve feet in length and Seven feet in width. It was fashioned by Bertram Sweetland. It is made of oak which was removed from the U.S.S. Constitution, "Old Ironsides" during repairs.

In the interstice formed at the center at the center of the cross memebers lies a silvercoin, symbolic both of the coins of Christ's betrayal and of the ancient tradition of placing a coin under the mainmast of a ship.
