Sunday School

Sunday school is held at 9am each Sunday.

The first Sunday of the month the lessons are done in the sactuary during our Story Sunday service.

Teachers:

Tracey Healey is the lead teacher in the first Godly Play classroom for grades Pre-K through 1.   Victoria Kirchner is the lead teacher for grades 2 through 4.   In these classes, children experience stories from the bible with props as well as lecture.  The younger class works more with Stories from the bible where the older students work more with the people of the bible.  A lesson from bible stories or social issues (i.e. what gifts God has given us and how we can thank him by sharing them with others.  After the lesson we have our “wondering” session where the children are asked which part of the lesson they liked best, where are they are in the lesson or which part of the lesson is about them.  We get great responses from all ages.  Next the children have “work time”.  During work time they can stay in the quiet room and read a book, do a puzzle, write in their journals, or work with a story.  The children benefit from this work time in many ways.  They practice how to be a “Christian friend” by sharing and helping each other, and become more familiar with items they hear in the bible stories (i.e. they bring Mount Sinai, Jonah’s waves, and Adam & Eve’s apple tree into the dessert to create their own story).  Children also may choose to go in the playroom and do a craft or play church with the children’s alter (there are many baptized dolls and stuffed animals thanks to this alter).  After work time we get back into our circle, share our work (if the child desires), and recite the Lord’s Prayer before joining our families in church.

Our fifth through eighth graders work hard and have fun as well.  This class works from the Life Together curriculum, as well as lessons created by the teachers, Sally Cassidy and Lisa Blaney.  The end goal is the students will be able to find bible passages, understand them, and apply what they read to their life.  The focus is on scripture readings that coincide with the readings from the service.  A general class starts by finding and reading scripture in the bible.  This is followed by a lesson on its interpretation and how it affects their lives today.  They then create a project or play a game to reiterate the lesson.  This class also contributes greatly to the church's outreach efforts with various fundraisers and participating in the Walk for Hunger.

All of the children join the congregation at the “Peace” portion of the service and remain for communion and the closing of the service.

Sunday school registration for 2010 will be held after the 9:30am service on September 12th.  The first day of classes will be on September 19th.
